Echo - male Double Yellow Head Amazon - Amazona
Ochrocephala Oratrix |
||||
| Echo's name comes from Greek Mythology. Echo was a nymph whose power of speech was curtailed by Hera, so that she merely repeated the concluding phrases of a speech and returned the words she heard. |
| Echo was rescued by Feathered
Friends Avian Rescue and Resources Association (FFARRA) in Edmonton, Alberta, who
were taking care of him after his owner had given him up at the SPCA.
FFARRA was told that Echo was two years old.
We heard about Echo via the internet in early August 2002. On 11 August we went to seen him and brought him home. We use the date we got him as his birthday. |

| Echo took an immediate liking to my wife Cindy. With some work an patience he is now very gentle and sociable with both Cindy and I. | |

Like most Amazons, Echo loves having a shower. When being sprayed, he is very animated, voicing his pleasure with lots of "oh" sounds and little squeals of delight. Giving him a shower is a very entertaining process. |
| Living up to the reputation that Double Yellow Head Amazons have, Echo is a talented talker who rivals our Greys in ability. He is exceptionally playful and particularly beautiful. | |
| When Echo came to live with us, some of the
flights on his wings had been clipped. In this picture taken four months
later he has completed a large molt and almost all the flights have
grown back in.
We are fortunate to have the facility and be able to implement the safety measures that allow our parrots to remain fully feathered and fly safely. I believe that flying is a very important element towards maintaining good physical and mental health. |

I find it amusing when I read description of Amazons being "green parrots". Perhaps I am biased; I see them as extraordinarily beautiful. |
